Krypteia
The krypteia, or warrior school, was a total institution that existed in ancient Spartan society. It was a total institution because the boys who attended lived, worked, and played all within the krypteia, and were not allowed to leave until a certain age. They also had their lives controlled by other people in the krypteia, which is a defining aspect of a total institution. Other characteristics that the krypteia had of a total insitution were:
-All daily tasks served the institution a greater purpose (to create more Spartan warriors)
-Rules were abundant, and closely enforced
-There was somewhat of a priviledge system, the better the warrior turned out to be, the better his social status
-There was an embarrasment factor in place to help control the people within: the boys had to excercise and perform certain tasks in the nude
